Savino Rasola: “Signing up for the BSSA was the best idea in years”

Three years ago, Savino Rasola (28) decided to leave his homeland Italy and look for a fresh start in Amsterdam. That wasn’t as easy as he assumed. Until he signed up for the BSSA.

A one-way ticket, the hope for a better future, and a can-do mentality. That was what brought Savino Rasola (28) to Amsterdam three years ago. Back home he had run out of options. “I’m from a city in the south,” Savino says. “I studied media design at a private school in Rome. After I graduated, I began working as a front-developer for a startup. It all looked promising at first, but in the end it turned out it was a lot of hard work for no money in return.”

With its struggling economy there was no hope for him left in Italy, as Savino puts it. It was time for a change. “I had visited in Amsterdam before, as a tourist, and I immediately fell in love with the city and its liberal mentality. I was lucky enough to meet an Italian guy who had already lived in Amsterdam quite some time. He helped me out finding a place to live and getting started.”

Although it wasn’t exactly his dream job – not even close – Savino started working as a bartender in several bars in town. “It was the only way I was able to make a living for myself. It wasn’t all bad, I met a lot people and I was able to save up some money, but after almost three years the late hours started to get the best of me.” It was time for a change – again.

Savino always knew that he wanted to pick up coding again. “So, when I heard about the BSSA it sounded like the perfect opportunity. I knew this was my chance to follow the career path that I always wanted. I signed up for the course that started in September. The best idea in years.”

With the money he saved, he was able to bridge the period of the course. “A very intense three months in which I learned everything there is to know about front-end and back-end development.” He starts laughing. “We started at 9:30 am and ended at around 6 pm, so it was almost like having a real job.”

Savino just finished the course and now started his (paid) traineeship at Pick This Up, a brand-new delivery platform. “I’m only just getting started, but I’m really excited. I have a one-year contract, which really enables me to make a valuable contribution to the startup.”
